The United Methodist Church (UMC) was created on April 23, 1968, when The Evangelical United Brethren Church, and The Methodist Church merged. The denomination shares a common history and heritage with other Methodist and Wesleyan bodies. The lives and ministries of John Wesley (1703-1791) and of his brother, Charles (1707-1788), mark the origin of their common roots.
Mt.
Nittany's History
Mt. Nittany Methodist Church was formed in 1967 as a yoked congregation from two churches in the Lemont area, the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church, both in "downtown" Lemont. At that point, the Churches were served by one pastor. Fellowship Hall and the Educational Wing were completed the same year (1967) and worship services began in Fellowship Hall, with the congregation sitting on metal folding chairs.
In the 1979-80 time frame, a building program was undertaken, and a Sanctuary was completed in October 1981. Hallelujah! We were finally able to worship in comfortable padded pews.
As a Church situated in a growth-oriented section of the Centre Region, Mt. Nittany has continued to grow each year. As this growth continues, it will be incumbent on Mt. Nittany's leadership to continue to establish programs and services which appeal to the entire congregation, and to meet the needs of those attending worship services and programs at this location. In an effort to meet the growing needs of our church, a facilities expansion committee was formed and our "Growing Together in Christ" campaign began in February 2001. We moved into our newly expanded facility in the winter of 2002-2003, holding an open house for the community in January 2003. This building project included expansion of the sanctuary, the addition of a modern Family Life Center, and relocated and enlarged nursery, offices, meeting rooms and kitchen.
Current programs and opportunities offered at Mt. Nittany include Praise Band, youth groups, choir, adult and youth Bell Choirs, weeknight activities for fellowship, prayer and Bible study.
